										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer" data-start="737" data-end="970">A new Cotton sustainability survey has revealed that cotton remains the world&#8217;s most trusted fibre for environmental safety, while consumer awareness of microplastic pollution linked to synthetic textiles continues to strengthen.</p>
<p data-start="972" data-end="1354">The latest research, commissioned by Cotton Incorporated, found that 85% of consumers across seven major markets believe cotton is environmentally safe, giving it the highest approval rating among all natural fibres surveyed. The findings reflect growing consumer preference for natural materials as sustainability becomes an increasingly important factor in clothing purchases.</p>
<p data-start="1356" data-end="1709">The survey covered respondents in China, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, the UK and the US. Cotton ranked ahead of wool (81%), silk (76%) and hemp (69%). In contrast, synthetic fibres received considerably lower environmental ratings, with only 43% of respondents considering rayon/viscose, polyester, nylon and LYCRA®/spandex to be environmentally safe.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="1ofoc5c" data-start="1711" data-end="1754">Microplastic awareness continues to grow</h2>
<p data-start="1756" data-end="1993">The Cotton sustainability survey also highlighted a sustained increase in public understanding of microplastic pollution. Around 45% of respondents said they were aware of microplastic waste in oceans, compared with just 27% in 2017.</p>
<p data-start="1995" data-end="2224">Consumers also demonstrated a stronger understanding of which textiles contribute to microplastic pollution. Around 62% correctly identified polyester as containing microplastics, followed by nylon (59%) and LYCRA®/spandex (55%).</p>
<p data-start="2226" data-end="2382">India recorded the highest awareness level at 56%, followed by China (47%), Germany (46%), Italy and the UK (44%), the United States (41%) and Mexico (39%).</p>
<p data-start="2384" data-end="2459">Andrea Samber, Director of Brand Partnerships for Cotton Incorporated said, &#8220;The global Plastic Free July movement provides an important opportunity to highlight consumers’ growing awareness of cotton’s environmental benefits. The vast majority of respondents correctly identified cotton as a safe choice for the environment, while awareness around microplastic pollution in our oceans has risen significantly since 2017.</p>
<p data-start="2812" data-end="3035">“Responsible management of all textile waste remains essential. Through the Cotton Lives On™ recycling programme, we encourage brands to recycle old cotton products, helping to keep valuable natural fibres out of landfill.”</p>
<h2 data-section-id="1x6jryw" data-start="3037" data-end="3080">Sustainability shapes clothing purchases</h2>
<p data-start="3082" data-end="3354">The research found that sustainability continues to influence buying decisions worldwide. About 84% of respondents said they are motivated to adopt environmentally responsible behaviours, while seven out of ten consumers consider sustainability when shopping for clothing.</p>
<p data-start="3356" data-end="3687">Material composition, recycling initiatives and product pricing were identified as the main factors consumers use to judge whether an item is sustainable. Additionally, 60% of respondents indicated they would be willing to pay a premium for sustainable apparel, with Gen Z and Millennial shoppers showing the strongest willingness.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="ll1kih" data-start="3689" data-end="3741">Cotton Lives On expands textile recycling efforts</h2>
<p data-start="3743" data-end="4108">Cotton Incorporated also highlighted the progress of its Cotton Lives On™ recycling initiative in the UK, which collaborates with several fashion retailers and brands including &amp;SONS, Margaret Howell, ME+EM, PAIGE, Charles Tyrwhitt, Hush, Whistles, Hobbs, Phase Eight, L&#8217;Estrange, Anthropologie, Bianca Saunders, Nexvision, Veronica Beard and The White Company.</p>
<p data-start="4110" data-end="4231">The programme collects unwanted cotton garments and repurposes them into mattresses for people experiencing homelessness.</p>
<p data-start="4233" data-end="4613">According to the organisation, approximately 8,000 kilograms of cotton have been collected across the UK, resulting in the production of more than 100 roll mats. Each mat is manufactured using recycled cotton equivalent to around 45 cotton T-shirts and is distributed to individuals moving into hostels or permanent accommodation as part of essential support packages.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>AI is set to reshape how UK retailers allocate and execute marketing and ecommerce budgets, with a new report forecasting that nearly two-fifths of spend will be affected by automation and augmentation by the end of the decade. Research from Retail Economics, produced with retail technology firm Voyado, estimates that 39%—equivalent to £3.7 billion—of UK retail marketing and ecommerce expenditure could be disrupted by AI by 2030, as the technology moves from early experimentation into operational infrastructure.</p>
<p>The report suggests retailers expect tangible operational benefits to arrive quickly. Many anticipate “meaningful” impact within the next 12 to 18 months, while clearer and more scalable returns on investment are expected in roughly two years. That timeline, Retail Economics argues, creates a narrowing window: delaying capability building risks leaving retailers exposed as AI shifts from optional pilots to a baseline requirement for competing.</p>
<p>Today, the report estimates around 32% of marketing and ecommerce tasks are already exposed to being supported, enhanced or partly automated by AI. The impact spans core activities including personalisation, analytics, campaign execution and product discovery—areas where AI can compress time-to-decision and increase the precision of targeting. Data and analytics functions are among the most immediately exposed, the report notes, because AI systems excel at pattern recognition, forecasting and optimisation. Customer personalisation and experience execution are also highly exposed, reflecting retailers’ push for more relevant, real-time engagement across channels.</p>
<p>Brand and creative functions appear less automatable in direct terms, but still represent a meaningful share of exposed budgets because creative and brand-building remain large line items in marketing spend. In other words, even modest automation or augmentation in these areas could move substantial amounts of AI retail marketing spend.</p>
<p>The research covers four European regions—Benelux, DACH, the Nordics and the UK—and paints a market in transition. Almost all retailers (95%) have tested AI tools in marketing, with many beginning in 2023 through early generative AI and large language model experimentation. But the report finds a split between those still exploring what AI can do and those embedding it into daily operations.</p>
<p>Around one in four retailers remain in exploration or pilot-scaling phases, often constrained by data quality, limited in-house skills or uncertainty over governance. By contrast, 45.3% are described as “operational,” meaning AI is integrated across multiple workflows and is influencing day-to-day execution. Another quarter say AI is embedded at a strategic level, shaping planning, prioritisation and decision-making across functions rather than being limited to isolated use cases.</p>
<p>Despite growing adoption, commercial proof remains uneven. Only 5% of retailers say AI is currently delivering clear, scalable ROI—highlighting a gap between activity and outcomes. Still, most expect that to change quickly as tooling improves and organisations mature their data and operating models.</p>
<p>Skills and governance are cited as major barriers in the UK. The report notes that cultural hesitation and governance concerns constrain three quarters of UK retailers, while two thirds point to a lack of internal expertise as a core obstacle to deploying AI effectively. Data compliance concerns also slow progress, particularly as retailers balance personalisation ambitions with privacy and regulatory expectations.</p>
<p>Voyado’s chief product officer Felix Kruth argued that the next phase of value will come from autonomous systems operating behind the scenes. “What’s most exciting is that we’re still very early in the journey, and the AI we’re using today is likely the least impressive version we’ll ever see. This is still young technology. Generative AI has already delivered significant efficiency gains, but it’s agentic AI, built on the right data foundations, that will prove real commercial value.</p>
<p>“In the race to demonstrate AI progress, it is easy to focus on what is visible: new interfaces, chatbots, and features. But without the right data foundation and context, the impact simply does not materialise. The real value in retail is created by AI working in the background – prioritising the right customers, optimising decisions and ensuring the right thing happens at the right moment.”</p>
<p>Retail Economics CEO Richard Lim described the next two years as decisive. “The next two years represent an inflexion point as AI shifts from experimentation to competitive necessity. Retailers are on a journey, and while most have begun testing and deploying AI, few have reached a stage where it is delivering consistent commercial returns.</p>
<p>“As AI transforms retail tasks, it is reshaping how marketing and ecommerce spend is executed. The retailers that succeed will be those building the right data foundations, skills and operating models now, as AI becomes a core requirement for competing effectively in retail.”</p>

<p>According to the platform, this segment has pushed through notable price increases across multiple categories and simultaneously reconfigured promotions—cutting discount intensity while extending promotional windows—to respond to macro pressures such as inflation and higher tariff-related costs. Retviews argues that this approach is helping the mid-market become the main contributor to sector value, overtaking luxury in overall value leadership.</p>
<p>The research points to a strategic repositioning among mid-market fashion brands: more elevated design language, narrower and more curated ranges, and higher pricing intended to create separation from mass-market competitors. Compared with 2024, the study estimates mid-market prices rose by about 50% in Europe during 2025 and were even “doubling” in the US.</p>
<p>Retviews also highlights category-level price moves across both Europe and the US. In Europe, between September and December 2025, both the average discount rate and the share of discounted products declined versus earlier years.</p>
<p>Lectra links these adjustments to a tougher economic backdrop. It cites UK consumer price inflation at 3.4% in December 2025 as one factor behind cautious spending patterns. In the US, tariffs of 15% to 50% have raised import costs for exporters, prompting selective price increases that may limit demand.</p>
