The Circular Textile Ecosystem has been established through a new strategic partnership involving the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA), finishing technology specialist Jeanologia, and the U.S.-based recycling firm Looptworks. This initiative is designed to advance the commercial-scale blended textile recycling of materials, moving proven innovations from the laboratory to the industrial floor. By combining research, engineering, and end-user validation, the partners aim to address the complexities of textile circularity that individual organizations cannot solve in isolation.
Advancing Commercial Scale Blended Textile Recycling
At the center of this collaboration is the Jeanologia Green Machine, a textile recycling technology developed by HKRITA to solve the persistent challenge of separating cotton and polyester blends. Jeanologia, which brings three decades of experience in industrializing textile solutions, has worked on the technology transfer and the manufacturing of the first industrial-scale unit. This sustainable textile innovation utilizes an ozone-based decoloring process to prepare materials for efficient separation and reuse.
The first industrial deployment of the Jeanologia Green Machine is currently taking place at the Looptworks facility in Oregon. As the initial industrial user, Looptworks is responsible for validating the technology under real operating conditions. This step is essential for ensuring that the system can be adopted across the global circular textile industry, providing a scalable solution for various production environments, including self-contained mills and dedicated recycling centers.
Collaborative Innovation for Material Circularity
The partnership is already looking beyond the initial Oregon installation, with plans for two additional units in Italy and Turkey. Carmen Silla, marketing director at Jeanologia, stated that the focus remains on building a scalable Circular Textile Ecosystem rather than setting immediate public volume targets. The objective is to foster a pre-competitive space where research institutes and technology partners collaborate to accelerate sustainable textile innovation.
This initiative aligns with Jeanologia’s broader strategy to extend its expertise from water conservation to material circularity. By integrating textile recycling technology into the manufacturing value chain, the partners seek to close the material loop. The widespread adoption of blended textile recycling solutions is expected to provide a significant impact on the circular textile industry, transforming how the sector manages textile waste at scale.
