A new initiative called CottonConscience is working to rebuild trust across the cotton supply chain by combining satellite Earth observation, DNA tagging, and water systems data to trace cotton from field to initial processing stage.
The project is supported by the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Business Application Space Solution Programme. According to Brand Conscience, the company behind the initiative, this multi-layered approach is specifically designed to address the difficulties fashion brands face when trying to verify sustainability claims and reward farmers who employ responsible practices.
Sentinel Satellites and Open Tools at the Core
Central to CottonConscience’s methodology is the use of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellites from the European Union’s Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, supported by tooling from OpenEO. These technologies enable monitoring of cotton fields at scale and provide critical environmental context, particularly around water demand and usage patterns.
Brand Conscience has stated that these satellite-based methods offer more consistent and tamper-resistant oversight compared to traditional audits, which have long relied on paper-based tracking systems that are susceptible to error and manipulation.
Why This Matters for Cotton Traceability
The fashion industry has struggled for years to make credible, verifiable claims around sustainable sourcing. This is largely because conventional audit frameworks lack the rigour and scale required to monitor complex global supply chains effectively. Cotton traceability through remote sensing and biological markers represents a more robust alternative, addressing both the practical and compliance-related needs of brands and retailers.
A Collaborative Trial Spanning Five Countries
The trial involves close collaboration with prominent UK fashion retailers and cotton producers operating in Egypt, India, Turkey, Pakistan, and China. Solutions are being co-designed to reflect the practical needs of farmers alongside the cotton traceability requirements of retailers.
The planned proof of concept is intended to demonstrate the real-world practicality of combining remote sensing with DNA tagging to generate actionable and verifiable supply chain insights. The broader goal is to support improved water stewardship and regenerative farming practices, ultimately enabling brands to make credible, evidence-backed claims around sustainable sourcing.
Expanding the Data Framework
Beyond satellite imagery, CottonConscience is also evaluating the potential integration of thermal sensors and meteorological datasets to further refine its environmental modelling capabilities. The project has emphasised its commitment to open standards, ensuring system scalability while maintaining the flexibility to adopt proprietary or commercial tools where necessary.
Building a New Standard for the Cotton Supply Chain
By combining satellite monitoring with farmer field surveys, DNA tagging, digital supply chain records, and biological analysis, CottonConscience aims to deliver a level of traceability that can scale alongside industry demand and help brands stay ahead of evolving sustainability regulations.
The project’s backers believe this integrated approach could improve trust for all stakeholders involved — from growers on the ground to end consumers — and set a new benchmark for transparency across the global cotton supply chain.
With satellite Earth observation offering a level of environmental oversight that paper trails simply cannot match, CottonConscience represents a meaningful step toward making verified, responsible cotton sourcing a practical reality for the broader fashion industry.
