AI Summary

Hyosung TNC, a global leader in providing comprehensive sustainable textile solutions, is significantly strengthening its commitment to environmental stewardship with the launch of an innovative integrated bio-spandex production platform. This strategic expansion, backed by an investment of nearly $1 billion in Vietnam, positions Hyosung TNC at the forefront of the Sustainable Bio-Spandex Innovation, aiming to transform the textile industry’s reliance on fossil-based materials.

Driving a Greener Value Chain with Advanced Bio-Based Solutions

The newly established platform represents a pioneering effort to create the world’s first fully integrated bio-spandex value chain. It ingeniously converts sugarcane-derived feedstocks into Bio-BDO, Bio-PTMG, and ultimately the renowned creora® bio-based spandex, all within a unified production ecosystem. This commercial-scale production has already commenced, marking a crucial step in reducing the apparel industry’s carbon footprint and dependence on petroleum-derived raw materials.

The development of this bio-spandex from plant-derived alternatives is a testament to the company’s vision for a more sustainable future. Initially, the ‘creora® bio-based’ spandex utilized industrial corn as a raw material, and a third-party life cycle assessment found that it reduced its carbon footprint by 23 percent compared to conventional spandex production. Now, with the transition to sugarcane as a feedstock, verified through the VIVE platform, Hyosung is further enhancing its commitment to eco-friendly fibers with strong carbon reduction potential.

The ‘creora® bio-based’ spandex has garnered global certifications, including the USDA BioPreferred and SGS Eco Product Mark, underscoring its environmental credentials. These certifications confirm that the bio-based fiber is manufactured using plant materials within an eco-friendly production environment.

Performance Without Compromise for Sustainable Textiles

A significant aspect of this Sustainable Bio-Spandex Innovation is its ability to deliver the same high levels of flexibility, durability, and quality as traditional spandex. This ensures that global apparel brands seeking sustainable textiles do not have to compromise on the performance standards required for various applications, including activewear, sportswear, swimwear, and intimate apparel. The chemically identical nature of Hyosung’s bio-based spandex to its conventional counterpart allows hygiene manufacturers to seamlessly integrate it into existing production lines without modifications.

Hyosung TNC’s proactive approach aligns with the surging demand for lower carbon materials across global fashion markets. The sustainable fabrics market is experiencing substantial growth, driven by heightened consumer awareness and a shift towards eco-conscious production, with projections indicating significant expansion over the next decade.

Hyosung TNC’s Broader Vision for Eco-Friendly Fibers

This integrated platform represents a cornerstone of Hyosung TNC’s broader strategy to expand its portfolio of eco-friendly fibers. The company is consistently investing in research and development to offer a comprehensive range of sustainable materials, including various bio-based and recycled fibers. Chairman Cho Hyun-joon has articulated the company’s vision to become a leading global supplier of sustainable materials, driving the market towards more responsible and environmentally conscious choices. This initiative is expected to play a crucial role in decarbonizing textile supply chains and advancing circular economy goals.
