AI Summary

A new cross-industry initiative is taking shape with the aim of accelerating the adoption of next-generation materials and lower-carbon supply chains across the global fashion sector. Named The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition, the initiative is being established with convening support from the World Economic Forum and will bring together more than 60 signatories spanning fashion brands, manufacturers, retailers, and technology firms.

Aggregating Demand to Overcome Scaling Barriers

The Fashion Coalition is designed to aggregate demand for materials and production methods that its founders say can meaningfully reduce environmental impacts but continue to remain costly, limited in supply, or difficult to adopt at commercial scale. Its focus covers organic, recycled, and next-generation fibres, as well as manufacturing technologies intended to reduce water use, chemical inputs, and greenhouse gas emissions.

By uniting a broad base of industry players, the coalition seeks to create the kind of collective momentum that individual brands cannot generate on their own — addressing systemic barriers to sustainable fashion adoption through coordinated action rather than fragmented efforts.

Financing Structures to Support Suppliers and Innovators

Alongside its demand aggregation efforts, The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition will work with the World Economic Forum to develop dedicated financing structures. These are designed to combine de-risking mechanisms from development finance institutions with private investment, helping suppliers and material innovators access capital in markets where longer-term demand commitments are in place. The intent is to make funding more accessible to those operating in the sustainable supply chains space, particularly where commercial viability has historically been difficult to establish.

Fashion Coalition Lever Library and Canopy Partnership

A newly created Fashion Coalition Lever Library will provide members with guidance on more than 100 established and emerging interventions. The library covers materials by fibre type and includes a directory of innovators, and was developed in consultation with more than 30 brands and suppliers.

The coalition will also draw on Canopy’s Next Gen Now programme to connect participating companies with next-generation fibre producers and technologies considered ready for commercial adoption. This partnership is central to the coalition’s broader objective of diversifying fashion’s fibre sourcing base and building more resilient sustainable supply chains.

Industry Voices Behind the Initiative

Amazon’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Kara Hurst, commented on the coalition’s formation: “Fashion has no shortage of ambition on sustainability. People are already looking for more sustainable options when they shop, and now the industry needs to deliver at scale. Through The Climate Pledge, we’re bringing together more than 60 fashion and retail brands, manufacturers, and innovators to help make that happen.”

Canopy founder and Executive Director Nicole Rycroft added: “Transitions of this scale don’t happen brand by brand; they happen when an industry moves together. By diversifying fashion’s fibre basket with emerging Next Gen materials, this coalition builds more resilient supply chains, reduces sourcing risk, and keeps vital forests standing.”

Early Lifecycle Focus and Policy Ambitions

The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition has stated its intent to target interventions earlier in the product lifecycle, rather than concentrating solely on the reuse, recycling, or disposal of garments. The coalition also said it would use experience gained from production-stage projects to inform environmental policymaking — positioning industry practice as a potential input to regulatory and policy frameworks.

Signatories Spanning Fashion, Retail and Innovation

Fashion-sector signatories to The Climate Pledge involved in the Fashion Coalition include Selfridges, Vestiaire Collective, Brooks Running, Circ, unspun, Another Tomorrow, and Anna Sui, reflecting a range of players from luxury retail to sustainable innovation-focused brands operating across the low-carbon fashion landscape.
