China has maintained its position as the world’s leading apparel exporter in 2024, generating approximately $390 billion in clothing exports, according to the latest report from the World Trade Organization (WTO). Bangladesh follows closely in second place, with exports reaching around $50 billion, solidifying its role as a significant player in the global textile market.

China’s dominance in apparel exports stems from its vast production capabilities and established supply chain infrastructure. However, the country faces increasing challenges, including geopolitical tensions and rising labor costs. Recent analyses indicate that major Western fashion companies are diversifying their sourcing strategies, with many reducing their reliance on Chinese suppliers due to concerns over labor practices and political stability. Nearly 60% of leading U.S. fashion firms now source less than 10% of their apparel from China, marking a significant shift from previous years.

On the other hand, Bangladesh has continued to strengthen its position as a top apparel exporter, noted for its competitive labor costs and extensive experience in producing garments for global brands. Despite facing obstacles such as rising material costs and sustainability challenges, Bangladesh’s garment industry is thriving, fueled by a growing demand for ethically produced clothing. The country’s exports have increased by 7.23% in 2024, demonstrating its adaptability and responsiveness to the global market’s evolving needs.

While India is not as prominent as China or Bangladesh, it is also enhancing its apparel exports, estimated at around $18 billion. India’s strengths lie in its rich textile heritage and quality production, but it must overcome challenges related to infrastructure and competitiveness to capture a larger market share.

Overall, the global apparel market is experiencing growth, driven by strong demand for sustainable and ethically sourced products. As consumers increasingly prioritize transparency and responsible practices, both China and Bangladesh must innovate and adapt to remain at the forefront of the industry. The evolving landscape also sees other countries, including Vietnam and India, poised to play more significant roles in global apparel exports, contributing to a more diversified supply chain.
