Indonesia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) is actively lobbying the United States National Cotton Council (NCC) to advocate for reduced tariffs on Indonesian garment exports to the U.S. This strategic effort aligns with Indonesia’s objective to enhance its export competitiveness and foster stronger trade relations with the United States.

Arsjad Rasjid, Chairperson of Kadin, emphasized the importance of lowering trade barriers on Indonesian garment exports during a recent meeting with the NCC. He highlighted how reducing tariffs could bolster economic cooperation between the two nations, benefiting both the U.S. and Indonesian textile industries. “We urge the National Cotton Council to assist in lowering tariffs, as this will not only promote our garment exports but also strengthen the U.S.-Indonesia trade partnership,” said Rasjid.

The discussions also touched on the broader potential for collaboration between the two countries, particularly in areas of sustainability and technological innovation within the textile sector. Rasjid noted that Indonesia’s garment industry has increasingly adopted sustainable production practices, making it well-positioned to meet the demands of American consumers who prioritize eco-friendly and ethically-made products.

Indonesia’s push for reduced tariffs comes as competition in the global textile and apparel market continues to intensify. Neighboring countries like Vietnam, which benefit from more favorable trade agreements with the U.S., have posed challenges for Indonesian exporters. By securing a reduction in tariffs, Indonesia aims to create a level playing field and boost its market share in the lucrative U.S. garment industry.

The NCC, representing the interests of America’s cotton industry, plays a pivotal role in determining trade policies and fostering international trade relationships. A partnership between Indonesia and the NCC could lead to increased demand for U.S. cotton in Indonesia’s textile production, creating a mutually beneficial outcome for both nations.

In addition to tariff reductions, Kadin is exploring opportunities to strengthen bilateral trade policies and encourage U.S. investment in Indonesia’s textile sector. Rasjid highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to improving the business climate and adopting innovation-driven strategies to attract foreign partnerships.

This effort forms part of Indonesia’s larger strategy to expand its global trade footprint, especially in the textile and apparel sectors, which are among the country’s top export earners. By engaging with the NCC and advocating for fairer trade terms, Indonesia hopes to further cement its position in the U.S. market while enhancing economic ties with one of its largest trading partners.
