UK-based fashion and homeware retailer Matalan has dedicated over £25 million ($33 million) to improve its stores across the UK, in line with its ongoing business transformation efforts.
Matalan’s commitment to its UK stores follows the retailer’s successful acquisition of an additional £25 million in funding from investors in April this year, aimed at accelerating its multi-year transformation.
In 2025, Matalan plans to refurbish 30 existing locations and open 10 new or relocated stores, expanding its footprint in key regions such as London, Essex, Hampshire, and Northern Ireland.
This initiative marks the beginning of a broader strategy to revamp Matalan’s entire store portfolio over the next three to five years.
The company intends to maintain this momentum by opening around 10 new stores annually, focusing on areas currently lacking Matalan’s unique blend of style, quality, and value.
Additionally, Matalan aims to upgrade 30 existing stores each year, incorporating layout enhancements and design improvements to create a more enjoyable shopping experience.
Upgrades will involve clearer department distinctions and centralized services, such as fitting rooms and checkout areas, for improved accessibility.
The retailer is also set to introduce new technologies aimed at enhancing customer convenience, including upgraded self-service checkouts that are faster and easier to use.
Stores that have recently been refurbished, such as those in Croydon, Linwood, Bristol Filton, and Dumfries, have exceeded initial sales expectations.
The first quarter of 2025 has signified a significant revival in the global consumer M&A market. Dealmakers returned with renewed enthusiasm, pushing the total consumer deal value to $75 billion, reflecting an 84% increase year-on-year and a 5% rise…
James Dorling, Matalan’s property director, stated: “Matalan storefronts have been a fixture of UK communities for 40 years, so it is only right that bricks-and-mortar retail remains at the centre of our transformation programme. With 10 exciting new store openings and extensive refurbishments across our estate, this investment marks a step-change in our strategy – creating a better, more seamless shopping experience for our loyal existing customers, while also introducing the Matalan brand to new consumers.”
In addition to enhancing its physical stores, Matalan is investing in its digital and e-commerce capabilities. This includes the launch of a new app designed to support both its online sales platform and customer loyalty program.
Matalan currently operates a network of over 265 stores in the UK and internationally, alongside an integrated e-commerce platform.
