The Council of Fashion Designers of America Foundation (CFDA) has announced a collaboration with Jeff Bezos’s Bezos Earth Fund to launch “The Next Thread Initiative,” a groundbreaking sustainable fashion initiative with a total funding of $6.25 million. This partnership is designed to promote sustainable innovation and education throughout the U.S. fashion industry.
Over the next three years, this initiative will support independent designers with grants ranging from $50,000 to $500,000, while also providing scholarships for students earning between $25,000 and $75,000, prioritizing those who focus on sustainability in their design education.
Steven Kolb, president and CEO of the CFDA, remarked, “This partnership provides designers and students with tangible support to build a more sustainable future for fashion.”
He added, “Under Lauren Sánchez Bezos’s leadership, the Bezos Earth Fund is turning ideas into action and propelling innovation forward. This initiative aligns with a core pillar of the CFDA and builds upon more than a decade of progress in advancing sustainability in American fashion.”
In addition to grants and scholarships, the sustainable fashion initiative will host events and create digital storytelling content to highlight the work of grantees, fostering discussions about sustainable design within both the fashion industry and the wider public.
Tom Taylor, president and CEO of the Bezos Earth Fund, stated, “Fashion has always mirrored culture — and now it can be a driving force for change. Together with the CFDA Foundation, we’re investing in the next generation of designers and innovators dedicated to building a more sustainable future for fashion.”
Insights gained from this sustainable fashion initiative will also shape future investments by the Earth Fund in materials science, manufacturing innovation, and supply chain transformations. This effort reinforces CFDA’s leadership in sustainability, education, and creative advancement.
Both organizations articulated their mutual goal of broadening sustainable options for consumers, marrying style, quality, affordability, and environmental responsibility in a balanced approach.
