Valentino Garavani, the iconic Italian designer and founder of Valentino SpA, has passed away at the age of 93 at his residence in Rome.
Born on May 11, 1932, in Voghera, Garavani was renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and classic designs. Throughout his illustrious career, he dressed countless royals, Hollywood stars, and cultural figures, establishing Valentino as one of Italy’s most prestigious fashion houses. In 1960, he co-founded the Maison in Rome with business partner Giancarlo Giammetti, creating a brand that embodied elegance, emotional depth, and couture excellence.
Today, the brand is led by CEO Riccardo Bellini and creative director Alessandro Michele, who are committed to evolving the Valentino Garavani legacy for new audiences. The company’s offerings include haute couture, ready-to-wear for both men and women, alongside accessories and beauty products.
In a heartfelt tribute, the Maison stated in an X post, “The Maison remembers Valentino Garavani with deep emotion and profound affection. We share with heartfelt sympathy the grief of his loved ones, and we remain committed to preserving and elevating the valued creative, cultural, and human heritage he entrusted to us, upon which Maison Valentino is founded.”
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy also paid her respects, calling Garavani “an undisputed master of style and elegance and the eternal symbol of Italian haute couture. Italy loses a legend, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations.”
Even in this time of mourning, Valentino’s presence was felt during the 83rd Annual Golden Globes, where brand ambassadors Colman Domingo and Omar Apollo wore custom looks crafted by Michele. In addition, stars such as Natasha Lyonne, Hannah Einbinder, and Adam Brody showcased seasonal Valentino collections, underscoring the Maison’s continuity and enduring significance.
Valentino Garavani will lie in state at PM23, located at Piazza Mignanelli 23, on January 21 and 22, 2026. His funeral will take place on January 23, 2026, at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome.
