Between 2021 and 2025, Pakistan officially sanctioned 14 new cotton varieties designed to enhance the national seed portfolio and support the wider textile value chain. These varieties exhibit specific advancements in fibre quality, increased ginning outturn (GOT), and improved resistance to environmental stressors such as heat, drought, and bollworm infestations. According to official documentation, the development of these seeds was led by two prominent cotton research institutes: the Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI) in Multan and the CCRI in Sakrand, Sindh.
CCRI Multan was responsible for the development of 11 of the approved varieties, which include Bt CIM-663, Bt CIM-678, Bt CIM-785, Bt Cyto-535, Cyto-226, CIM-775, CIM-343, Cyto-537, Cyto-511, Bt CIM-775, and Bt CIM-990. The remaining three varieties—Bt CRIS-682, Bt CRIS-674, and CRIS-644—were introduced by CCRI Sakrand. These advancements are aimed at addressing modern agricultural challenges while maintaining rigorous fibre quality standards required by the global market.
Technical Performance and Fibre Quality Standards
The performance of these new approved cotton varieties is measured through several critical indicators, including ginning outturn, staple length, and micronaire values. The data indicates that the varieties achieved a ginning outturn ranging from 38.2% to 42.3%, with staple lengths reaching up to 29.6mm and fibre strength peaking at 33.5. These technical metrics are vital for the Pakistan cotton industry, as they directly impact the efficiency of spinners, ginners, and manufacturers.
Micronaire, a measure of fibre maturity and fineness, is a key determinant of dye absorption and fabric quality. All 14 varieties fall within the ideal range of 3.5 to 4.9. Furthermore, fibre strength—the measure of force a fibre can endure before breaking—ranged from 28.3 to 33.5. This encompasses categories defined as good, very good, and excellent, ensuring that the resulting yarn meets high-tier durability requirements.
Specific Variety Characteristics and High-Yield Potential
Among the selections, CIM-775, released by CCRI Multan in 2023, recorded the highest ginning outturn at 42.3%. This variety also demonstrated high tolerance to the cotton leaf curl virus (CLCuV). Another notable entry, Cyto-226, achieved the longest staple length of 29.6mm. These high-yield cotton seeds provide various options for farmers depending on their specific regional needs.
The drive for climate-resilient agriculture is evident in varieties like Bt CIM-663 and Bt CIM-678, both approved in 2021 and noted for their heat tolerance. Additionally, CIM-343, released in 2023, recorded the highest fibre strength of 33.5 while offering resistance to both drought and bollworms.
Regional Contributions to the Textile Value chain
The varieties developed by CCRI Sakrand have further bolstered the textile value chain by providing specialized options for the Sindh region. Bt CRIS-682 and Bt CRIS-674, both approved in 2024, maintained consistent ginning outturns of 38.5%. The non-Bt variety, CRIS-644, offered a high-yielding alternative with a ginning outturn of 40.5% and a staple length of 28.4mm.
By integrating these 14 varieties into the agricultural sector, the primary cotton research institutes continue to focus on stabilizing production through biological resistance and technical superiority. These efforts ensure that the Pakistan cotton industry remains equipped with high-yield cotton seeds capable of meeting rigorous international fibre quality standards.
