BuyWander, an auction-based marketplace connecting buyers with returned and overstocked goods from major retailers, has secured $21 million in fresh funding to accelerate its expansion across the United States. The investment round was led by Madrona Venture Group and Inspired Capital, with continued backing from earlier supporters including Triple Impact Capital, Silence Ventures, Animal Capital, and a group of angel investors.

The company plans to deploy the capital toward geographic growth, technology enhancements, and strengthening its executive leadership team.

Building a New Model for the Retail Returns Problem

Founded in 2023 by Jordan Allen and Brock Kowalchuk, BuyWander operates as an auction-based marketplace that bridges the gap between retailers sitting on mountains of unsold or returned inventory and buyers seeking better access to it. The platform works with retail giants such as Amazon, Target, and Walmart, offering their returned and surplus goods through a seven-day auction format where bidding starts at just $1.

What sets the model apart is its locally rooted structure. All purchased items are collected in person at a nearby warehouse, eliminating shipping entirely. Buyers also benefit from a one-week return window on all purchases, giving the experience a level of trust and transparency that online-only platforms often lack.

BuyWander currently operates eight locations and has recently entered the Denver and Chicago markets. A new warehouse is also set to open in Minneapolis in the near term, signaling the company’s continued city-by-city growth strategy.

Jordan Allen, co-founder and CEO of BuyWander, spoke about what is driving this momentum: “Retailers are sitting on billions of dollars in returned and overstocked inventory every year, and buyers are hungry for a better way to access it. We’ve seen that appetite play out in every market we’ve entered. This funding lets us bring that experience to more cities, faster, and put BuyWander in front of the next wave of buyers who are done with the old returns model.”

Leadership Team Strengthened Ahead of Scaling Push

Alongside the BuyWander $21M funding announcement, the company has made several senior-level appointments to support its commercial growth and warehouse operations. Laura Sasser has joined as chief operating officer, Daniel Kiepfer as vice president of data and AI, Abu Marcose as senior director of warehouse technology, and Roger Ling as director of marketing.

These new hires complement an existing leadership bench that includes chief technology officer Srinivas Palura, operations senior vice president Brent Hendricks, and chief architect Ark Rozycki.

Board Additions Following the Funding Round

The BuyWander $21M funding round has also brought notable additions to the company’s board. Scott Jacobson, Alexa von Tobel, and Greg Greeley have each joined the board, while Charlotte Ross will serve as a board observer.

Alexa von Tobel, founder and managing partner of Inspired Capital, commented on the investment: “BuyWander is solving a problem that’s only getting bigger. Retailers are drowning in returned and overstocked inventory, and there’s never been a good local solution for moving it. What stood out to us is how much traction the model has already found in every market it’s entered. Jordan and Brock have built something that works for buyers, works for retailers, and scales city by city without losing the local warehouse experience that makes the model work.”

A Growing Opportunity in the Returned Goods Marketplace

The retail returns problem is well documented and continues to grow in scale. BuyWander’s auction-based marketplace is positioning itself as the go-to local solution in a space where no clear industry-wide answer has previously existed. With the $21M raised, the company is now equipped to push further into new US cities while continuing to refine the technology and operational infrastructure behind its overstocked inventory auction model.

As BuyWander expands its footprint across the country, the combination of fresh capital, a reinforced leadership team, and a proven warehouse-based model suggests the returned goods marketplace is preparing for a significant phase of growth.
