AI Summary

The latest weekly wool market report revealed a total of 28,392 bales were offered across the Australian wool market, of which 25,009 bales were sold. The pass-in rate rose to 11.9 per cent for the week, reflecting a degree of buyer selectivity in the current trading environment.

The Eastern Market Indicator declined by 21 cents to close at 1,857 AU$/kg. In US dollar terms, the Eastern Market Indicator recorded a steeper fall of 34 cents, settling at 1,325 US$/kg. The larger decline in US dollar terms was partially offset by a softening Australian dollar, which eased by approximately one US cent to 71.33 US cents, providing some cushion to local currency returns.

Tuesday Opens With Mixed Results Across Eastern Centres

According to the Australian Wool Innovation commentary for the week of 12 September 2026, Tuesday’s session opened with mixed outcomes across the Eastern selling centres. Price movements across categories ranged from 21 cents dearer to 34 cents cheaper. Better-specified 18 and 18.5-micron wool carrying high tensile strength and low vegetable matter content attracted comparatively stronger competition from buyers, drawing more competitive bidding relative to other lines.

Fremantle Records Larger Price Corrections

Fremantle’s one-day auction registered the most significant corrections during the week. Merino micron categories at Fremantle fell in a range of 29 to 70 cents cheaper, as reported by wool.com. These corrections were notably larger than those observed at the Eastern centres.

Wednesday Selling Continues Lower at a Slower Pace

Eastern selling extended its softer trajectory into Wednesday, though the pace of decline moderated. All merino fleece categories finished the session between 3 and 41 cents cheaper. Chinese buyers demonstrated greater caution in their approach throughout the week, while renewed interest from European and Indian mills focused on inventory replacement helped temper further downward pressure on merino wool prices.

Tight Greasy Wool Supply Remains a Defining Market Factor

For exporters, importers, and mill buyers active in the Australian wool market, the constrained greasy wool supply outlook continues to underpin the broader market context. Season-to-date offerings stand at 252,452 bales, which is 8.6 per cent below the equivalent period last year. This tightening in greasy wool supply is considered a key structural factor for market participants as the season progresses.

Despite the week’s price retreat, the Eastern Market Indicator remains 513 cents, or 38.2 per cent, above where it stood 12 months ago — reflecting the sustained strength the Australian wool market has built over the past year.

Trade Focus Shifts to Nanjing Wool Market Conference

Industry attention is now directed toward the 37th Nanjing Wool Market Conference, which is scheduled to commence at the time of this report’s release. The annual event is expected to draw significant participation from the global wool trade community and is closely watched for its role in shaping buyer sentiment and trade dialogue across key wool-consuming markets.
