AI Summary

This innovation is designed to tackle the problem of microplastic pollution caused by the shedding of synthetic textiles.

The creation of REPREVE enhanced by CiCLO technology is the result of a partnership with Intrinsic Advanced Materials, which is a collaboration between Parkdale Advanced Materials and Intrinsic Textiles Group.

This advancement aims to significantly reduce the time synthetic fibers contribute to environmental pollution while maintaining their original strength and functional properties, explains UNIFI.

Incorporating CiCLO technology into REPREVE involves adding a specialized additive during the fiber production process, allowing synthetic yarns to degrade similarly to natural fibers such as wool.

These fibers are specifically designed to break down in various environments, including soil and ocean water, without compromising performance, durability, or colorfastness.

REPREVE fibers utilizing CiCLO technology are engineered to biodegrade in moisture-rich and microbially active environments, ultimately decreasing the persistence of microplastics in nature, according to the company.

Currently, several environmentally conscious brands, including Bass Pro Shops, Billabong, Champion, Oakley, and Target, are beginning to utilize products containing CiCLO.

UNIFI CEO Eddie Ingle stated: โ€œWe can always do more to lessen our environmental impact throughout the product life cycle.

โ€œOur collaboration with Intrinsic Advanced Materials addresses the worldwide issue of synthetic microfiber shedding by providing a globally available solution that mills, brands, and retailers can now integrate to reduce microplastic fibre pollution.โ€

The entire line of REPREVE-branded products can be produced with the CiCLO additive, including options like REPREVE Takeback and REPREVE Our Ocean.

With its global availability, REPREVE featuring CiCLO technology is positioned as an easily adoptable solution for companies looking to confront international concerns about microplastic pollution.

UNIFI plans to showcase its REPREVE portfolio with CiCLO technology at the ongoing Functional Fabric Fair, scheduled for April 14-16 at the Oregon Convention Center. Attendees can also find a separate exhibition of CiCLO technology.

Cheryl Smyre, vice president of Parkdale Advanced Materials, remarked: โ€œSynthetic textiles are a major contributor to microplastic fibre pollution, and it is a challenge that requires industry collaboration.

This joint initiative integrates two powerful solutionsโ€”REPREVE and CiCLO technologyโ€”to maximize recycled content while addressing microfiber pollution at its source.

โ€œAs brands navigate increasing sustainability commitments and regulatory demands, the collaboration provides a tested and effective solution that empowers brands to tackle two critical environmental challenges while preserving performance and recyclability.โ€
