Vaayu, a leading platform for fashion sustainability data, has announced its acquisition of Carbonfact, a move poised to significantly enhance the capabilities available to apparel and footwear brands seeking robust environmental accountability. This strategic integration is set to broaden the scope of carbon accounting and product-level data solutions for a rapidly evolving industry.
For Vaayu’s existing customers, this acquisition ensures seamless continuity on a platform specifically designed to address the intricate sustainability needs of the fashion and footwear sectors. Carbonfact brings to the combined entity a substantial network of over 200 brands, including prominent names, complementing Vaayu’s established expertise in retail and fashion sustainability data. The expanded platform is now positioned to serve more than 300 apparel and footwear brands globally.
Carbonfact’s platform is recognized for its comprehensive tools, encompassing product impact measurement, detailed carbon accounting, eco-design functionalities, and advanced environmental reporting. Its extensive database is a cornerstone of its offering, featuring more than 150,000 fashion-specific emission factors and primary data sourced from over 7,000 textile factories.
Addressing Growing Regulatory Demands and Data Challenges
The acquisition comes at a critical juncture for sustainability teams across the industry, which are facing increasing pressure to comply with new regulations demanding granular, product-level environmental information. These include initiatives such as the Digital Product Passport, France’s Eco-Score, and California’s SB253, all of which underscore the urgent need for precise retail environmental reporting.
Marc Laurent, CEO of Carbonfact, highlighted the industry’s fundamental challenge: “The fashion industry has a data problem that no amount of ambition can solve without the right infrastructure. Upcoming regulations require a shift from corporate-level data to product-level data. This deal gives the industry a single, rigorous foundation, and it unites two of fashion’s most comprehensive datasets. Vaayu’s customers will find a platform that handles every framework and compliance deadline they face, backed by data depth that no other platform in this sector can match.”
Echoing this sentiment, Namrata Sandhu, founder and CEO of Vaayu, commented on the shared vision: “We started Vaayu to give retail and fashion companies the granular, product-level climate data they need to actually decarbonise, not just report on it. Carbonfact shares that conviction, and together we can deliver it at the scale this industry now requires. Our customers will get the same rigour they trust us for, now paired with the compliance coverage their next chapter demands.”
Advancing Decarbonization Solutions
Vaayu, founded in 2020 by former Zalando head of sustainability Namrata Sandhu, quickly established itself with one of fashion’s early product-level carbon platforms. The company received backing from Atomico and CapitalT. Carbonfact, for its part, was supported by Alven, Headline, and Y Combinator.
Looking ahead, Carbonfact is also developing an AI-powered system it terms “Environmental Intelligence.” This system is designed to further assist fashion businesses in managing complex climate data and reducing their overall environmental impact, moving beyond mere compliance reporting to proactive decarbonization solutions. This development underscores the combined entity’s commitment to innovation in driving sustainable practices across the fashion sector.
