The Bangladesh government has initiated a coordinated effort to address the pressing challenges facing the Bangladesh apparel sector through a newly formed textile industry committee. During the committee’s inaugural meeting on July 29, held at the Prime Minister’s Office conference room in the Secretariat, high-ranking officials and industry leaders discussed strategic remedies for energy shortages and rising production costs. Salman F Rahman, who participated in the session, requested a follow-up meeting within the next week to finalize actionable solutions and workable recommendations.
Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir emphasized that the Prime Minister is closely monitoring the difficulties within the trade. The textile industry committee was established to formulate recommendations that can be implemented rapidly to stabilize the value chain and support mills and manufacturers. Showkat Aziz Russell, president of the BTMA, detailed the primary obstacles during the meeting, specifically highlighting how energy shortages and escalating production costs are impacting the global competitiveness of the Bangladesh apparel sector.
Collaborative Efforts to Enhance Operational Stability
The delegation, led by the BTMA, explored various policy interventions and support measures alongside a panel of government experts. Notable attendees included the Prime Minister’s Economic and Planning Adviser Dr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostakur Rahman, and Acting National Board of Revenue Chairman Ahsan Habib. These policy interventions aim to mitigate the operational pressures currently weighing on the nation’s largest export-earning sector.
The committee was officially formed following a July 22 session where a delegation met with the Prime Minister to outline the sector’s main difficulties. Industry leaders have welcomed this direct government involvement as a necessary step toward addressing long-standing operational hurdles in the textile and apparel value chain.
