Heimtextil, taking place from 12 to 15 January 2027 in Frankfurt, Germany, will introduce the Functional Futures Lab, highlighting innovative materials and their applications across architecture, interior design and hospitality. Curated by Future Fabrics Expo, the exhibition will showcase materials offering functional benefits such as temperature regulation, acoustic comfort and flame protection.
The exhibition will feature both experimental prototypes and commercially available solutions, with information on their respective stages of development. This will help architects, designers, manufacturers and hospitality professionals assess emerging technologies and identify potential applications.
Exploring the Next Generation of Materials
The Functional Futures Lab will examine how materials can respond to changing requirements in living and working environments. Exhibits will range from innovative textile fibres and dyes to durable composites developed through research and material innovation.
The focus will include products designed to improve thermal and acoustic comfort, support healthier indoor environments and adapt to different uses and environmental conditions.
“Performance is a key topic for the future of the textile industry. We see this worldwide at our events, from apparel to home and contract textiles. Together with Future Fabrics Expo, we showcase at Heimtextil what innovative materials will be capable of in the future. The Functional Futures Lab connects early-stage developments with solutions that are already available and highlights new potential applications for architecture, interior design and hospitality,” says Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt.
Amanda Johnston, Chief Design Officer at Future Fabrics Expo, adds: “We are delighted to partner with Heimtextil January 2027 to elevate the conversation around the future of home and interior textiles. This partnership will connect inspiration with actionable solutions and help shape a future focused, forward-looking, responsible industry,”
Three Themes Highlight Material Development
The exhibition will be organised around three colour-coded themes: Circular Systems, Living Nature and Natural Performance. These areas will explore material origins, processing methods and functional properties, including durability, temperature responsiveness, flame resistance and antibacterial effects.
Featured innovations will include upholstery materials made from untreated wool fibres and living root systems designed to provide flame protection without toxic chemicals. Other exhibits will showcase durable bio-based composites and dyes derived from food waste for textiles and wood.
A Platform for Industry Knowledge Exchange
Located in Hall 4.1, the Functional Futures Lab will form part of Heimtextil’s Interior.Architecture.Hospitality segment. A dedicated Talk Spot will host expert discussions, while a café area and guided tours will encourage networking and knowledge exchange.
The initiative aims to connect material innovation with practical applications, helping industry professionals make informed decisions about future product development and material selection.
