Myanmar’s apparel export markets are undergoing a visible structural realignment. During January through September 2026, the country’s total apparel exports declined by 21.1 per cent year on year, with European and North American destinations recording the steepest drops. Meanwhile, Asia-Pacific’s share of Myanmar’s apparel exports has been quietly but consistently growing — a trend that continued through the first three quarters of the year.
A Declining but Still Dominant European Market
According to data from sourcing intelligence tool TexPro, Myanmar’s apparel exports to Europe fell by 25.1 per cent during January–September 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Despite this contraction, Europe retained its position as Myanmar’s largest regional apparel export market, accounting for 53.57 per cent of total shipments. This, however, marks a notable slide from the region’s earlier dominance, with Europe’s share having gradually declined from higher levels recorded in prior years.
The drop in Europe-bound shipments reflects a broader pressure on Myanmar apparel exports, driven by the overall 21.1 per cent year-on-year decline that brought total export value to well below the previous year’s figures.
Asia-Pacific Emerges as a Resilient Alternative
While Europe saw a steep fall, Asia-Pacific proved comparatively more resilient. Exports to the Asia-Pacific region declined by a milder margin, with the region’s share of Myanmar’s total apparel exports rising to 36.18 per cent — up from 32 per cent in the corresponding period of the prior year. This upward movement extends a longer-term trend in Myanmar’s regional export composition, where the Asia-Pacific textile shift has been gaining momentum year after year.
Japan led all individual country destinations, recording the highest export value among Myanmar’s apparel trading partners. Germany, Poland, South Korea, and Italy followed in the rankings, reflecting continued but softening demand from European buyers even as Asian markets absorb a greater share of Myanmar’s garment output.
The Broader Picture for Myanmar’s Garment Industry
The Myanmar garment industry has been navigating a challenging environment, with the apparel export decline cutting across multiple regions. North American shipments, like those bound for Europe, also registered sharp contractions during the nine-month period. The combined effect has brought Myanmar’s overall apparel export figure down significantly in 2026 compared to the year prior.
The gradual reorientation toward Asia-Pacific is not a sudden development. Data points to a multi-year shift in Myanmar’s apparel export dependence, with the Asia-Pacific textile shift accelerating as European and North American buyers recalibrate their sourcing strategies. Whether this regional rebalancing stabilises or deepens will be closely watched by industry observers tracking Myanmar apparel exports through the remainder of 2026.
