New Delhi: Information presented to Parliament on Friday shows India among the top textile exporting nations worldwide with a share of almost 4% of global textiles and apparel exports.

Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita said in a written response in the Lok Sabha that the export of Textiles and Apparel, including Handicrafts, grew by 7% in April-December 2024 compared with the same period of the previous year with the US, the EU and the UK accounting for a 53% share in total exports in FY 2023-24.

Different initiatives the government is running to support Indian textiles aim to The main projects are PM Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel (PM MITRA) Parks Scheme to create a modern, integrated, world-class textile infrastructure; Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme focussing on MMF Fabric, MMF Apparel and Technical Textiles to boost large-scale manufacturing and enhancing competitiveness; National Technical Textiles Mission focussing on Research Innovation and Development, Promotion and Market Development; SAMARTH – Scheme for Capacity Building in Textile Sect Exports have also been facilitated by the National Handloom Development Program for end-to-end assistance of the handloom industry and Silk Samagra-2 for thorough development of the sericulture value chain.

Apart from that, the minister said, the Ministry of Textiles is running the National Handicrafts Development Program and Comprehensive Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme to advance handcrafts.

Presenting Novel Ideas from Cutting Edge With a vast raw material base of natural fibre comprising cotton, silk, wool, and jute as well as manufactured fibre and manufacturing strength across the value chain from fibre to fabric to garment, the Indian textiles industry is among the biggest in the world, he pointed out. Declaring a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of cotton annually, the Government of India is maintaining a steady supply of cotton in the nation and sustaining interest of farmers in cotton farming.
