Recent findings from the BRC-Opinium survey indicate that the second-hand clothing sector in the UK remains robust, even as it experiences a slight dip. In 2025, clothing continues to be the leading category in the second-hand market, with 43% of participants reporting engagement in buying or selling adult clothing. This marks a decrease from 45% in 2024, yet it still solidifies clothing’s position as the most frequently traded item in the second-hand sphere.

The survey also highlighted declines in other categories, particularly footwear and childrenโ€™s clothing. Footwear sales dropped from 32% to 29%, while children’s apparel saw a decrease from 22% to 20%. These changes suggest a shifting landscape within various segments of the second-hand market, reflecting diverse consumer preferences and behaviors.

Generational trends also emerged from the research, revealing that Gen Z (ages 18-27) takes the lead in the second-hand market across most categories, aside from childrenโ€™s clothing. This demographic’s preferences illustrate a significant shift towards sustainable and affordable fashion choices.

Interestingly, while some clothing categories face declines, other sectors are thriving. Notable growth has been observed in the second-hand furniture market and smaller electronics, such as phones and laptops. This trend mirrors broader consumer habits favoring pre-owned goods across varied categories.

Sophie De Salis, sustainability policy advisor at the British Retail Consortium, remarked, โ€œIt is great to see so many people, across all generations, embracing the circular economy. Second-hand is no longer seen as second best. It has become a first choice for sustainability, affordability, and individuality. With many retailers now offering their own pre-loved collections, and so many great resale platforms, online marketplaces, and charity shops โ€“ customers are spoilt for choice.โ€

Now in its second year, the survey underscores a general upward trajectory in the second-hand economy, with seven out of ten tracked categories showing growth. This shift reflects a growing consumer inclination to buy and sell pre-owned items, driven by the convenience offered by online marketplaces and accessible charity shops.

Neill Oโ€™Sullivan, managing director of Post Office parcels and mails, noted, โ€œWeโ€™ve seen the surge in demand as customers rush to the second-hand market to find affordable products, or bring in some extra cash by offloading unloved items.โ€

As the second-hand clothing market remains a vital player in the UK economy, the embrace of sustainable fashion continues to gain momentum, indicating a bright future for pre-owned goods among a diverse range of consumers.
