AI Summary

In a notable shift in Madagascar’s trade landscape, Europe has surpassed North America to become the island nation’s largest regional apparel export destination during January through September 2026. This realignment came even as Madagascar’s overall apparel exports recorded a year-on-year decline, with shipments to the United States falling sharply amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding American trade policies under President Donald Trump.

Madagascar’s total apparel exports dropped year on year during the nine-month period, compared with the corresponding period of the previous year, according to data from TexPro, a sourcing intelligence tool.

Europe Gains Ground Despite Export Decline

Apparel exports from Madagascar to Europe declined during the January–September 2026 period. However, despite this fall in absolute terms, Europe’s share of Madagascar’s total apparel exports rose compared to a year earlier, enabling the region to claim the position of Madagascar’s largest regional export destination. The increase in Europe’s share reflects a comparatively sharper contraction in shipments directed toward North America.

North America Sees Sharp Drop

Shipments to North America fell steeply during the same nine-month period, compared with the figures recorded in January–September of the previous year. As a result, North America’s share of Madagascar’s total apparel exports dropped considerably, ceding its leading position to Europe. The decline in US-bound shipments has been attributed to tariff-related uncertainty and questions surrounding the African Growth and Opportunity Act, commonly known as AGOA.

AGOA Uncertainty Weighs on US-Bound Shipments

The decline in Madagascar’s apparel exports to the United States has been linked to the uncertain trade environment, particularly around AGOA trade policy and broader American tariff decisions under the current administration. Madagascar apparel exports to the US market have faced headwinds as exporters navigated this unpredictable trade climate, contributing directly to the regional share shift observed during this period.

The data, sourced from TexPro, underlines how shifting trade policy can influence sourcing and export patterns in key African apparel-producing nations. With Europe now holding the top position as Madagascar’s largest apparel export region and North America’s share declining, the structure of Madagascar’s export market has changed meaningfully through the first nine months of 2026.
