Jordan has secured a significant trade advantage after finalising a new reciprocal trade agreement with the United States that eliminates customs duties on all Jordanian garment and textile exports entering the American market.
The agreement is expected to enhance the competitiveness of the country’s apparel industry, which remains Jordan’s largest export sector to the United States.
Announcing the development, Jordan’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Yarub Qudah, said the tariff exemption forms part of the Reciprocal Trade Agreement signed in Washington last week.
Garment exports gain full duty-free access
Under the new arrangement, Jordan garment exports to US markets—including all categories of apparel and textile products—will be exempt from customs duties.
The agreement grants Jordan’s clothing and textile sector preferential access to one of its most important export destinations, providing manufacturers with an opportunity to strengthen their position in the highly competitive US market.
In return, the United States will reduce reciprocal tariffs on other Jordanian products to 10%, further improving bilateral trade conditions between the two countries.
Textile sector expected to benefit
Officials believe the agreement will accelerate export growth, particularly for garments and textiles, which continue to account for the largest share of Jordan’s exports to the United States.
During the first four months of this year, Jordan’s garment and textile shipments to the US exceeded JD431 million, highlighting the sector’s importance to the country’s export economy.
With the removal of customs duties, exporters are expected to gain stronger pricing competitiveness and greater opportunities to expand their presence among American buyers.
The new tariff arrangement is also expected to encourage additional investment in Jordan’s textile and apparel manufacturing sector while supporting employment and production capacity.
Trade pact builds on long-standing partnership
The latest agreement is designed to deepen commercial relations between Jordan and the United States by improving market access for businesses in both countries and facilitating smoother trade flows.
Negotiations reportedly continued for nearly a year before the agreement was signed.
The new framework builds upon the longstanding US-Jordan Free Trade Agreement, which came into force on 17 December 2001, and further strengthens the economic partnership established over the past two decades.
Industry observers believe the improved market access could reinforce Jordan’s position as a preferred sourcing destination for US apparel buyers seeking duty-free manufacturing partners.
The Jordan garment exports to US agreement is also expected to improve the country’s export competitiveness at a time when global apparel sourcing strategies are evolving amid changing tariff policies and supply chain diversification efforts.
