The United Arab Emirates has officially engaged the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to support the development of a comprehensive UAE textile circularity policy framework. This strategic collaboration is a cornerstone of the recently introduced Naseej initiative, a Presidential-level program designed to transition the national UAE textile industry toward a more sustainable and circular economic model.
Implementation of the Naseej Initiative
Formally launched in June, the Naseej initiative aims to pivot the sector away from traditional linear consumption and disposal patterns. The program is set to facilitate various nationwide projects focused on sustainable production and the enhancement of textile recycling infrastructure. By introducing research initiatives and market pilots, the UAE intends to accelerate the adoption of circular solutions across the broader UAE textile industry.
Role of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a global leader in circular economy transitions, will provide technical expertise derived from its work on the European Union Textile Strategy. The organization will collaborate with local partners to co-design a robust circular economy policy tailored to the specific needs of the Gulf region. This partnership will identify the primary opportunities and challenges in implementing the UAE textile circularity policy while drawing on international experience in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) design.
Strategic Regional Impact and Future Modeling
Jocelyn Bleriot, executive lead for policy and institutions at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, noted that the UAE’s status as a major re-export and trade hub presents a significant opportunity to apply a circular economy policy in a high-impact environment. By advancing sustainable fashion UAE standards, the framework is expected to serve as a replicable model for other nations within the Gulf and the wider Global South.
Improving textile recycling capabilities and promoting sustainable fashion UAE principles remains a priority for the project. As the foundation brings its international network to the Gulf context, the collaboration seeks to unlock untapped circularity potential across regional markets.
